Of course when it’s time for a break away from the kitchen, you can always opt out of self-catering and visit one of the excellent restaurants, cafés or local inns, all serving freshly-prepared food, much of it sourced from local producers - why not, you are on holiday!

The focus of the town centre is undoubtedly the 1,300 year-old Hexham Abbey, with its original crypt, although the abbey itself has undergone many alterations since the 12th Century. There are also two medieval towers, the Moot Hall dating back to the mid 14th Century and the oldest purpose-built prison in England, Hexham Old Gaol, also from the same period.

However, Hexham is not just history and heritage. As a modern-day market town it offers all the facilities and services you would expect to find in a similar town of its size, plenty to do on a weekend city break. It also has an active arts scene and the town’s award-winning Queen's Hall Arts Centre offering a wide-ranging programme during the year that includes drama, dance, concerts and European cinema.

And for those who wish to get out and about the great outdoors, aside from using the town as a base for exploring the wonderful Hadrian’s Wall, there’s horse racing at the nearby Hexham racetrack, cycling, golf, fishing, perfect beaches and other pursuits guaranteed to keep the group or the family totally occupied during their holiday.
