Staying in North East Wales for self-catering holidays

Centred on the busy town of Wrexham, this area of high moorland and coastal resorts gives the visitor a tantalising taste of Wales before reaching the big draws of Snowdonia and Cardigan Bay. There are lots of holiday cottages near Wrexham to rent for a self-catering Welsh holiday in the north east corner of this part of the UK.

The stately home of Erddig just to the south of Wrexham is a house caught in a time warp. Inhabited by the Yorke family for 200 years until 1973, when it was given to the National Trust, the interior of the property has remained virtually unchanged since 1900 and contains many of the original furnishings and decorations from the 18th and 19th centuries, all lit without electricity so it is best to try and visit on a bright day. The Wrexham Parish Church of St Giles is regarded as the finest medieval church in Wales and has some intriguing corbels and gargoyles, along with a memorial to Elihu Yale, the founder of Yale University, who emigrated from Wrexham.

Holiday cottages full of character forming a base to explore the area can be rented by the sea or inland. Big groups need to book well in advance to secure the large holiday houses, bunk houses and big spacious cottages which are so often taken for family holidays or for big groups of friends (6, 10, 12, even 20+) weekending together. Bring your dogs, they will love the walks - many properties are pet friendly!

To the southwest lies the market town of Llangollen, known for its railway and its canal, but world reknowned for the aqueduct that crosses the River Dee. This phenomenal piece of construction was designed by Thomas Telford and was, along with the Menai Bridge, one of his masterpieces. Crossing the river, which lies over 120ft below, can be a scary trip as there is only a path on one side, with a handrail, and nothing other than a sheer drop on the other. Most pedestrians never let go of the rail. Llangollen is also well known for the International Eisteddfod, which attracts up to 2,500 participants and 150,000 visitors every July - there are lots of holiday cottages near Llangollen for the Eisteddfod or to hire at any time of the year (summer, winter, spring or autumn>. On the edge of the town is the other Plas Newydd, home to the 'Ladies of Llangollen', two aristocratic ladies of Anglo-Irish extraction who formed a liaison in Regency times. Far from scandalising the nation they were welcomed into polite society and even entertained such figures as the Duke of Wellington and William Wordsworth. The house is full of carved wood and stained glass, gifts from their many guests.

Sandwiched between Offa's Dyke and the English border lies Chirk Castle, an almost complete Marcher fortress that was finished in 1310 and still lived in today. The building features Adam-style furniture, a medieval tower, a host of dungeons, and elegant staterooms, whereas the gardens have clipped hedges leading out into open parkland.

This area is split in two by the Clwydian Range of hills, with the Offa's Dyke Path following the ridge, which is an excellent way to see this part of Wales. Small villages and secluded farmhouses dot the landscape, but there are plenty of places to stay en-route, especially farm cottages, many of which are big holiday homes accommodating lots of people and are very well furnished. There are lots of self-catering cottages and holiday houses to rent near Offa's Dyke and they provide a great base for a walking holiday in Wales (look out for the popular hot tubs which are very luxurious!) - for small groups and lots of people.
